Class 4 - End of half term review

Class 4 would like to share their highlights of this half term.

This term, we have had a trip to Bristol to learn about the Triangular Slave Trade and how William Wilberforce, John Wesley and Edward Colston were involved in the slave trade and how they helped stop it. We also had an author visit; she was called Siobhan McDermott. She is a Chinese author and grew up there but her dad originally lived in another country. Siobhan wrote the series Paper Dragons.

On a Wednesday we did cross country with lots of schools in our trust. The year six were marshals and helped people carry on with encouragement. Some people in class 4 came first, second and third and lots of High Bickers came in the top ten.

Our school also had a workshop from the NHS with Tarron and Connie. They spoke about our mental health and told us how we can stay calm.

We had another school trip to farmwise where we had lots of workshops all based on farming. We saw the inside of a pig. We squeezed homemade apple juice and held the cutest chicks that were born the same morning as we were there. As we went into the dairy area we were invited into a large dairy truck. We also had fresh milk and made butter. At the end of the day our teacher was given a whole box of cheese to take home.

This half-term in class 4 has been GREAT and here are the activities that we have compiled: we have had an author come in called Siobhan McDermott and showed us the book Paper Dragons, and it was about a girl and going to a school under water. There were lots of challenges to complete.

Then we had cross-country throughout all the years, classes and schools and the course is where you go round the track into the woods for years 2,3,4 but for year 5 and 6 you go round twice.

Also, we had 2 school tips and the first one the Bristol trip. We learnt about Edward Colstand. He was a merchant and slave owner. We also learnt about John Wesley and he went around preaching  and telling people about God on a horse. On the second school trip, we went to Farmwise and there we learnt about how to save Dartmoor and to look after houses, poultry, dairy animals, and more.

Over the the half term we had lots of visits from NHS for our mental health. Also, we finished our paper this half term. It was really fun! By Grace Webber.

This year we have had two very fun trips like going to Bristol. In Bristol we learnt about the slave trade and had a little tour around Bristol. Our second trip was going to Farmwise and we saw loads of animals like pigs and cows and we got sweets, pens and ate a bit of chocolate. Written by Aubrey.

This Half Term Class 4 has been busy doing various things. In Maths we have been focusing on Place Value and Addition / Subtraction. In English we have been writing: letters with Mr Norton and stories with Mrs Kennard.

Trip: Bristol

This Term we have also been on many trips such as Bristol. Class 4 has been on a trip to Bristol, where we learnt about John Wesley and William Wilberforce. John Wesley was a Christian campaigner against slavery. John Wesley was born June 17, 1703 (June 28, 1703, in the Gregorian calendar) in Epworth, Lincolnshire, England, and died on March 2, 1791. William Wilberforce was an MP and also campaigned against slavery. William Wilberforce was born on August 24, 1759 and died on July 29, 1833.

Trip: Farmwise

Class 4 also went on a trip to Westpoint Exeter to learn about farms. There were loads of different zones, such as ‘The Pig Zone’ or ‘The Dairy Zone’. In the dairy zone, we got to make cheese. It was really good!

Cross Country, Opera Workshop, Mental Health and Author visit :

We did cross country. Some of the places we came were: 1st, 3rd and 7th.

We also did an opera workshop with rhymes. We had an author come in called Siobhan McDermott, writer of the Paper Dragons trilogy. The MHST introduced us to a game called Lumi Nova, which helps you overcome your fears!

This half term we have had various different events, such as trips to Bristol and Farmwise to a Royal Opera House workshop and an author visit by Siobhan McDermott. We also got very tired out doing cross country. At Bristol, we learnt more about John Wesley and his New Room. We went on a walk and saw the Edward Colston remains of the statue and Peros Bridge.

At Farmwise we made butter and apple juice while eating lots of food such as cheese and fruit. Excitingly, we went to try fresh milk in the dairy zone. Our group got to go into the pig sty and see sausages being made. I loved holding chicks that were only 8 hours old. One of them was 6 hours old!

With our opera workshop we did lots of singing and actions and meeting the staff. Siobhan made our imaginations spark by getting us to create ideas. She also said how clever we were with them and one day we could be excellent authors.

In cross country we got some good scores, such as 7th, 10th, 3rd and even 1st. These places were held by Sonny E , Madeleine J, Grace W and Amelia L. We were all very tired after doing lots of laps. For lots of us it was our first time.

Farm to fork - Farmwise

When we got there, we learnt to take care of Dartmoor and how to learn about it.

Then we saw a Dartmoor pony. His name is Bob.

Then we made butter and we went in a milk truck.

Then we saw a half adult pig to see where our food comes from, and we saw a butcher making sausages...and we could touch it.

Then we went to the vegetables section and we went into a tractor.

This half term we’ve been focusing on a story of ‘The Promise’ and writing it up in our book. We had to decide a consequence for them (the girl or boy). I wrote mine about a girl stealing a satchel from a man and him writing a letter to her telling her to give it back and never steal again or keep it and do good with what is inside.

In history, we have been focusing on the Transatlantic Slave Trade from the late 15th century to the late 19th century. We have been involving William Wilberforce and John Wesley for their hard work in the Transatlantic Slave Trade trying to abolish it. On Thursday we travelled to Bristol in a coach for our trip and looked at the remaining evidence of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

We also did TEAM cross country and it was really muddy. It is apparently the largest TEAM gathering we ever have. I really enjoyed it and love competing. We had an Opera workshop which class three joined us for as they couldn't manage to get it up onto the board. On Tuesday most of us ventured to Farmwise at Exeter Westpoint. On Monday we had a mental health workshop and two people came in. They were called Tarun and Connie. We did something called 10 a day which is what you can do if you need to talk to someone.

Farmwise

At Farmwise we went into groups: Miss Trofas group and Miss Kenards and Mrs Scowens. I was in Miss Kenard's group. There were loads of things to do. It was really fun. I remembered that we went to the dairy zone we got to try some milk. It was a bit weird at first but then it was a bit better. Then I remember that the last thing we did was we went to the chicks and got to hold them. They were a bit needy.

Bristol trip

We arrived at John Wesleyan's new room at 10:00. What we learnt was that John Wesleyan had a horse to take him around but that horse always knew where to go so he didn't need to tell him where to go at all.

Opera workshop

The opera workshop was really fun even though we had some problems doing the video and class 3 had to come in. It was fine, and we got to do actions with them. It was really fun.

In this half term in class 4, we had a cross country and everyone did very well in the school trust and some people from our school in year 5 and 6 were marshals. Sonny came 1st, Madeline came 3rd! We all did our best, which was the main thing.

With Mrs Kenard, Miss Trofa and Mrs Scowen, we went to a place called Farmwise. It was extremely fun!! We first learnt about Dartmoor and how to keep it nice, then we went to the dairy section, then the pig section and at the end, we weren't really supposed to but we held baby chicks!!

This half term we also got to meet a real author called Siobhan McDormat and learn about her childhood and she also read us a paper dragon book she made, it was very fun and interesting, but some of the year 6s had a Chumleigh visit which I was included in so I missed most of it, but the start was really nice so I think the whole thing probably was.

We also had a ballet and opera visit which was cool and very fun but we missed the ballet because the camera or something wouldn't turn on but the opera was still very incredible!

Near the end of this half term we did a mental health workshop which helped some of us and talked about a game called lumi nova, and it helped most of us a bunch!

That was our half term this year. It was very fun and busy!!

We have had an author visit about the paper dragon. I liked listening to her childhood .  Her name was Siobhan McDermott. We also had a very exciting workshop with the royal opera house. It was very fun and interesting. Then, in sport we did cross country and got very tired. We had to start on the track and run round it into the woods and run round the track again back into the woods. Everybody who competed was very fast and did really well !

We had a fun workshop with the NHS team and learnt about mental health and how your feelings work, and you have got to express them and the two people who came were Connie and Tryan. They were so nice to us. I really enjoyed it! I would definitely experience it again. They told us to play a game called lumi nova to help with our feelings and you have to unlock challenges!

At the farm we learnt about pigs and how to make sausages and got to go in a pig sty. It was so cool. We also got to hold baby chicks, they were so small, cute and tiny they were also really fluffy. We got to try some foods, for example, pasta chips, sausages and even pizza. It was so fun. I loved looking at the animals the pig sty. We learnt all about animals and farming. This school trip was so good. I really enjoyed it.
